The Mukungwa River flows near Musanze town in Rwanda’s Northern Province. It is the main white water rafting destination in the country and one of the best adventure spots in the whole region.
You paddle through Class II and Class III rapids. That means there is real excitement on the water, but no extreme danger. You do not need any prior rafting experience. Our guides handle everything. You just hold the paddle and enjoy the ride.
Along the way, you pass through open rural landscapes, local villages on the riverbanks, and get distant views of the Virunga volcanoes on a clear day. The river also runs through birdwatching zones, so keep your eyes open.
📍 Location: Mukungwa River, Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) — Northern Province, Rwanda. Less than 20 minutes from Volcanoes National Park.
Trips run from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. When you arrive, your guide walks you through a full safety briefing. You learn how to paddle, how to hold on, and what to do if you fall in. Everything is explained clearly before you touch the water.
Then you gear up and get on the river. The experience lasts 2 to 4 hours depending on water levels that day. Higher water after rain means stronger rapids and more excitement. Lower water means a calmer, more scenic float.
At all times, a trained guide is in your raft. Safety kayakers follow along the whole route. If anyone falls out, the team is right there.

This activity is open to a wide range of people. You do not need experience. Most people who come have never been rafting before and have a great time.
Leave valuables, cameras, and phones in the vehicle or at the meeting point. The river will get everything wet.
You can go white water rafting on the Mukungwa River all year. Rwanda’s weather is mild and the river stays active in every season.
The most exciting time is just after the rainy seasons, March to May and October to November. Rainfall raises the water level and makes the rapids faster and more powerful.
The dry months, June to September and December to February, offer calmer water and clearer skies. This is a good choice for families or anyone who wants a more relaxed experience.
